The Fox and Other Great Theater Spots by Pink Door Decor

Today was my daughter's tenth birthday and we spent our afternoon taking in the Atlanta Ballet's The Nutcracker. The show was fabulous and the venue was just as great.  I love attending shows at the Fox Theater in Atlanta.  The story behind the Fox is one of great interest and the link will lead you to its story.

What I want to focus on in this post is the beauty of this old theater.  It is very stately and nostalgic.  You feel like you are inside an old Egyptian Temple.  As a matter of fact, the interior design of the Fox is heavily influenced by Alhambra in Morocco and Egypt's Temple of Kharnak.

Stage For The Atlanta Ballet's The Nutcracker
After leaving the show, I was curious to find out how the Atlanta Fox ranked with other theaters in metropolitan cities in the U.S.  To my disappointment, the Fox was not ranked in the "Best US Theatres" ranking I found done by the Travel Channel. The Alliance Theater in Atlanta made the list but not the Fox.  Yes, I have been to the Alliance Theater,  if you are wondering.  The Alliance is modern and much newer than the Fox which makes it difficult to compare the two.  The acoustics are great in the Fox and I have never attended a bad show there.  I simply feel like I am in a true theater when I am there.

Color Watch 2014 by Pink Door Decor

The word has spread like wild fire about Pantone's Color of the Year for 2014.  If you haven't heard, this years beauty is Radiant Orchid.

I cannot wait to see all of the fashion and design combinations used with this color over the next few months.  What't great about Pantone colors is you can easily purchase a dress from one store in this color and go to a totally different store and find matching accessories. Fabric companies like Duralee, have already created fabrics to mimic Radiant Orchid.  The color reminds me of a richer, more sophisticated mauve that was so popular in the '80's.

What color combination would you add to Radiant Orchid?  I think my favorite add on color would be some shade of gray.  What do you think?

Before and After Salon Transformation

Last week I attended the relaunch of 1245 Salon and Spa located in Atlanta, GA, near Atlantic Station. The salon had just undergone a three month makeover done by yours truly, with the help of a few great people.

Terrell Dinkins, Designer & 1245 Salon and Spa Owner Tammy White

Makeover highlights included:
  • Adding a curved wall to create a separate lobby area
  • Applying blue and green paint colors to provide more of a spa feel
  • Installing two partition walls to expand the dryer room and create privacy in the shampoo area
  • Lightening up the floors from an earlier drab brown to a new light grey
  • Replacing commercial lights in the ceiling with other types of lighting, including pistachio green pendant lights and recessed lighting
  • Creating a photo gallery — what the designer calls a “wall of style” — of client head shots to showcase the work of the salon’s master stylists
  • Completing the salon’s look with new furnishings, decorative accessories and wall art
The makeover is a far cry from the salon’s original industrial-type feel. The space was cold, looked like a warehouse and did not match the name,"Salon and Spa".
Take a look at the before and after shots of the salon:

Suit and Tie for Your Windows by Posh Interiors, LLC

Believe it or not but in the design business, there are truly high seasons when people want to make sure there homes are in "Posh Notch" condition for the holidays.  We are embarking upon that season. Towards the end of the summer and right before the holidays, designers get pretty busy, at least I do. I am starting on a couple of simple projects.  One of the small projects is adding window treatments to a client's family room and helping her select a few accessories to give the room a finished look.

Here's what I have known but encountered again.  Men just don't get the whole window treatment thing.  They can't believe the cost of fabric per yard and the cost of dressing a window.  When I explained to the husband of my client that custom window treatments are like purchasing a custom made suit for a guy, he got that concept.  The suit is made just for him and the window dressings are made to fit your window like no other curtain on a rack.  If you want a posh,  custom look, you have to pay for it.

Have you taken the plunge and put the suit and tie on your windows or are they still undressed?
I would love to hear from you.

Grays Don't Have To Be Blue

I absolutely love playing with colors. Starting with a neutral pallet gives you a playground of freedom when it comes to color and patterns. One of my favorite neutral shades is gray. Gray doesn't have to be moody blue. Combine it with your favorite splash of fun and watch it come alive.

I am playing around with looks for a new project. Look at the beautiful shades of gray in the chair, lamp, pillows, and window hardware. Yes, it makes a beautiful neutral backdrop for the beginning of a project. The splash of orange gives the gray life. Think about it, you could add pretty much any vibrant splash to gray and it would look fab!
What's your favorite neutral color... Black, Gray, Cream, White?

Companies That Give Back

Today,  I want to give an unsolicited plug to Lowe's Home Improvement Stores.  There logo says, "Never Stop Improving".  I would like to say that they "Never Stop Giving".  I have begun a makeover project (I will give you details and an update in a later posting) and without hesitation, Lowe's jumped right in to assist with the project.  I spoke to some of the employees and many of them shared their personal stories of how the company had given supplies back to schools where their children attended.

Yes, I know many companies do give back.  Unfortunately, they go unrecognized because they are large corporations. Well today, I want to say thanks (oh, and an fyi, Lowe's was my second employer in high school. I worked in there back payroll office).

I have begun a few summer home improvement projects on top of the many items I am trying to balance on my plate.  My first stop for all of my supplies will be my neighborhood Lowe's Store.

Until Next Time

Holiday Tabletops by Pink Door Decor

It's that time of year and many people are hosting holiday parties.  I might add that I hosted my community party last evening and my table top looked quite splendid with the flickering hurricane candles used as a center piece under the dimmed chandelier lighting.  Let's start with the centerpiece of the table.  Nothing like candle light to set the mood.

Table Top Focal Point

This beautiful hurricane in pairs makes a great focal point for the table and it resembles a Christmas Tree. The metallic swirls reflect the candlelight and add a festive touch to any celebration.

Transitional Place Setting and Dinnerware

This is one of my favorite dinnerware sets from Pottery Barn. The set has a transitional feel that would work in a formal or casual setting. The silver trim looks fabulous with the modern hurricanes found on Pink Door Decor.

Dressing Up The Sideboard

This beautiful piece of canvas art would look absolutely gorgeous with silver and white accessories. Hanging this modern piece of art over a traditional wooden sideboard would definitely add cheer to your holiday setting. I like this piece of art because it works regardless of your furniture style.

Send me your holiday tabletops and dining spaces.  I would love to take a peak at them!

Last week was the big summer market in Atlanta.  All of the showrooms and manufacturers came out and strutted their new accessories available for retailers to place in their stores (bricks/mortar and online stores). I am always excited because my goal as owner of Pink Door Decor is to make sure there is always something new for our customers.  Here are a few snap shots I took from some of my favorite showrooms.

Accessories To Liven Your Patio by Pink Door Decor

You know the old saying, "A great hair style livens up a drab out fit".  Well, that's the same when it comes to accessories in a room.  Accessories alone will bring life to an "OK" looking room.  In my next series of blogs, I am going to show you rooms that are nice, but could be impressively better with a few more accessories.

For those of you who have ever gone to our website, Pink Door Decor, this will be a great way to see how some of our accessories will work in one of your favorite rooms.

Decorating For The 4th of July

Independence Day is right around the corner.  Many people will host parties and cookouts at their homes in celebration of the big day.  Some households will go all out with the decorations. I ran across some great ideas beyond the cute flags on a wooden stick that's sure to woo your guest as they arrive to your event.

Photo Courtesy of Blog "As The Curtain Hangs"
This room is a very nice welcome wagon to Independence Day.  You will not need to remove anything after the party is over.  As a matter of fact, this room is great for summer decor, especially if you like changing out your room seasonally.  The panel boards behind the sofa can be easily duplicated by hot gluing fabric to thin plywood cut to any shape you like and mounting to the wall.  You can pick up red, white, and blue pillows pretty much from any home decor store.

Square Flag Pouf from Pink Door Decor.com
For a simple touch with a lot of style, this modern Square Flag Pouf is great addition to your July 4th decor.  I love this pouf added to a nautical theme room using khaki, red and blue.

Don't forget the dessert!  Ok, I am pretty convinced that this is the easiest decorated cake I have come across in a long time.  Yellow cake, white icing, strawberries, and blue berries is as simple as it gets.  What a a marvelous idea!

This is why I love Pinterest! I love this pocket holder, which is creativity at it's best.  Just make sure you wash the jeans before you place someone's napkin, fork and spoon inside. The star can be ironed or hand painted on the pocket.

I would love to hear from you.  What are you doing for the 4th of July?  Are you having a party or going to a party? Will you decorate your place for the event?

Your Mood and Lighting...The Connect

As we continue our lighting series, I want to leave you with just one thought that just might change your mood:

“There’s a visceral connection between our surroundings and our mood, and the amount and quality of light is the first element that dictates those moods.”

Lighting a Room with Lamps The Right Way

I first must make a confession when it comes to lamps. I have them in every room in my house, with the exception of the bathroom and workout room (even though I am not opposed to having them in the bathrooms). I love the mood lamp lighting creates, on top of the fact that they can make quite a statement to any room.

Underneath Cabinets

This lamp is perfect for creating a nightlight in your kitchen by placing it underneath the cabinets.  It will also look fabulous lighting hallways or even in bathrooms because of it's petite height. One of my favorite lamps at Pink Door Decor.

Adding style to your desk will create punch.  This compact task lamp is adjustable at the arm and head, making reading at your desk easy. It works better as a desk reading lamp than a corner reading lamp in your bedroom because of it's height. The vintage silver finish compliments the style on this lamp.

Table lamps and floor lamps are a key source to lighting a room. Selecting lamps versus picking out overhead lighting (track, canned, chandeliers) is an easy option for everyone, however there are many things to consider before purchasing. For example, will the light shine directly in your eyes while you are sitting next to the lamp. Will the shade color create the brightness and color you desire in the room? Make sure if you decide to only use lamps in your room, all sides of the room are lit. Lamps are enhancements to overhead lighting.  Too many lamps take away from the coziness of using only a few lamps.

The Conversation Piece

OK, this is the big reason why I love lamps. They can be a piece of art and interesting fixture on a table or shelf. They will surely create a conversation from your guest as well as an added light source to a dark corner or room.
Share with us how you use lamps.  Do they make a statement or just serve as a lighting source?

Industrial Chic In Traditional Spaces

Let's face it, industrial style decor is here to stay, at least for a while. That's a good thing if you have gone all out and decorated your place this way.  One of my favorite restaurants in Atlanta has beautiful industrialized decor.  You gotta check out this place if you live here or passing through.  Not only for the food, but also for the decor.  I digressed there for a moment thinking about my last meal at the restaurant.

Getting back to decor, if you are looking for a few great pieces to add to your industrial chic collection or just getting started decorating in this style, periodically go to www.pinkdoordecor.com and window shop.  New pieces are added weekly.

Table? Yes Indeed

This Vintage Steel Shoe Locker makes for an excellent side table or night-stand. It is very functional and provides storage space. As a matter of fact, I can think of several places this locker would look great: Office, Teen Space, Powder Room, keeping in mind style.

This wine rack is a talking piece.  It has style and fits quite well in an industrial space and even in a space where you are blending styles (an entire blog topic all on its own).

Shabby, industrial chic is how I would describe these metal flower vases. They are by no means traditional, but would look fabulous holding a romantic boutique of flowers to soften a rather rustic loft, don't you think?

Don't Forget The Walls!

Hey, I just remembered that the Watershed has a very large Peace Sign hanging on their walls
(yes, I am getting hungry).  This is a very cool looking piece of art. Of course, people will ask where you found your Peace Sign Wall Decor.  Tell them www.pinkdoordecor.com.
