Soy Candles vs.Wax Candles...What's Better?

I searched around on the internet and several candle companies to get the answer to this very question, "What's Better, Soy or Wax Candles?"  It didn't take me very long to find some interesting statements about the two. According to one candle retailer that sells beeswax, soy, and gel candles, soy candles last 50% longer than candles made of petroleum-based paraffin, the ingredient found in most candles. They also burn slower and cooler (helping to better distribute fragrance), are non-toxic, less likely to trigger allergies, clean up with soap and water, and produce very little soot. These factors tend to make them more animal and child-friendly than traditional candles.

Soy wax is also a favorite of environmentally conscious consumers. Made from American-grown soybeans, it's biodegradable, a renewable resource, and from a global point of view, "supports the U.S. economy instead of foreign oil conglomerates."

Paraffin wax, on the other hand, is made
from petroleum and produces carcinogens and soot when burned. In fact, one air quality researcher stated that the soot from a paraffin candle contains many of the same toxins produced by burning diesel fuel. Even many of the seemingly healthy, aromatherapy candles sold today can do more harm than good.

Beeswax is another popular alternative to paraffin candles. It is also less likely to trigger allergies and does not produce toxins or soot when burned. It is generally more expensive than paraffin but burns longer. However, some candles labeled as beeswax may also contain paraffin
.

With this information, you decide which candle type you would like to burn in your home. In most cases, you will pay just a bit more for the soy candle, but in my opinion, you are also buying quality that is much friendlier to the environment (Terrell).

Let's Talk Tables....For My Mudroom

How much or how little should I decorate, that’s the question I’ve been pondering?  With the addition of the mudroom I’m forced to marry Practical with Decorative only because I want my home to look more like a magazine cover rather than a train wreck.   Keeping in mind my family of mess monsters I need a sturdy, beat up proof console table, a decorative bench that won’t mind being used as a stage, a runner and a really cool lamp.
Harbor Shelf

I have several attractive yet durable ideas for all of the above.  Unfortunately, my indecisiveness is preventing me from making a decision at the moment but fortunately I still have some time before construction is finished.

Let’s talk tables!  I love the look of the Harbor Shelf.  Although the shelves are glass, the frame is metal and the piece is a good combination of practical and decorative.

On the other hand I'm really digging the Industrial Engineering Table. Bottom line, it’s sturdy, it’s steel and would work great in a mudroom.

Choices, choices what is a girl to do?  I know, decide table or shelf and go from there.  It’s like building blocks, you have to start from the bottom and work your way up.  Looks like I’ve got a few more blogs to go before it’s all done.  (Teri)

Cubbies and Mudrooms

OK, so I'm currently obsessed with mudrooms and cubbies right now. After eight years of living in my home I've found that accessorizing a home is more than putting Knick knacks on a table or hanging a picture on a wall but designing and utilizing a useful space too.  After adding two kids, a dog and a cat my once neat abode lost it's magazine cover look and started to look more like a train wreck. Hence, I'm in the middle of construction and I'm adding a mudroom.  I've had so much fun designing the layout and picking out each detail from paint color to hook styles.  Once it's ready I'll be able to organize my home, redistribute the mess and reclaim my once neatly accessorized casa.
These are two of my inspirations.  I love the openess of the top picture and anyone with kids will understand why.  Back packs, jackets, sports gear and of course muddy shoes always seem to take over my kitchen once everyone is home.  Space, hooks and drawers are a must in my book.  The cubbies under the stairs is a great idea too if space is limited and the drawers are a bonus.  I used the wainscoting idea for my cubbies.  Stay tuned for pictures!

So...The moral of this blog is once my mudroom is finished I'll be able to reaccesorize my reclaimed home.  And of course I'll be shopping at Pink Door Decor to do just that.

What's Better, Live or Silk Plants?

Sun Star Water Garden

Clients are always asking whether they should use live or silk plants to create natural "outdoor-in" effects for their home. Combining both natural and silk plants will save you time and money and still give you a great look. The problem with some silk plants is the quality of the silk. There are companies who pride themselves in creating silk plants that make you do a double take with your eyes.

If you love having a fresh looking bouquet, but don't want to spend the money weekly buying fresh flowers, buy a good quality silk for each season. You will save a bundle!  Spray them with a good silk plant cleaner and put them away until the next season.

Pink Door Decor has a nice selection of silk plants, flowers  and topiaries that will make your guest do a double take. Take a peek at our collection and give us your feed back.

Designer Terrell Dinkins used silk flowers for a seasonal effect in this client's home.

Beautiful silk topiaries found on Pink Door Decor adds just enough color to this natural room.

Beautiful White, Beautiful Botanicals, Beautiful Everything.

When a room is washed in white and accented with shades of cream fabric you can say that's a start to brightening up a space.  Next, showcase large window's that scream natural light, incorporate mirrored tables, wall mirrors and a touch of green.  Before you know it you've created a chic city scene that will seem like a serene oasis.
